Having a Ball at the New Year By: Judy Hang
This event was carried on from the first Hmong refugees from Laos. This event is for the Hmong youngsters to find there mates and flirt a little here and there. At the New Year there will be entertainment like a beauty pageant, dance performances, singing performances, and many more. There is also the delicious traditional Hmong dishes like: papaya salad, Hmong sausages with sticky rice, bubble tea, and other scrumptious foods. Also you are welcome to wear the Hmong traditional clothing. There are at least four different styles of clothing you can wear, there’s Hmong green, Hmong white, Hmong stripe, and Hmong Chinese. There are also different styles to all of the traditional clothing, there's the traditional, and the modern styles. Which ever you choose to wear you'll be dress to impress. And you thought that was the fun part? Here's the fun part the Hmong cloth ball, playing ball tossing is an opportunity for singles to get acquainted and do a little flirting. Young men and women stand in separate lines and each of the opposing pairs tosses the cloth ball back and forth. By tradition, a missed catch requires the player to forfeit an item of clothing or jewelry to their opposing partner. These items are recovered by singing a love song. One item per love song and this is another excuse to get together. This is a very fun and entertaining event, so I recommend you should all check it out. It is a festive event every one should attend at least once. This year on Thanksgiving weekend, Friday Nov.23, Saturday the 24, and Sunday the 25. $5.00 a ticket at the doors.
