Graduation Standards
Learning Area: World Languages
Standard: World Language

A student shall demonstrate understanding of the features and appropriate applications of a foreign, domestic, technical, or symbolic language, other than English, and communicate in a variety of applications by:
A. showing evidence of comprehension of complex information communicated by others in a language other than English;
B. using the language to communicate complex information to others; and
C. analyzing information and communication situations based on criteria used by others highly skilled in the language.
Course Description
Each language course sequence prepares all learners to communicate effectively in the pluralistic society of the United States and look beyond borders to participate fully in the global community. A variety of cultural materials and technology provides learners with authentic experiences.

Students:
• speak, listen, read, and write in the Spanish language;
• develop insight into the Spanish language and culture;
• develop insight into their own languages and cultures; and
• gain direct access to information in the Spanish language.

Year three builds on all learning from the previous two years. More advanced practice refines the use of verb tenses and vocabulary as students participate in oral presentations and discussions, independent reading, and creative and directed writing. Longer time segments are spent exclusively in the Spanish language. Extensive cultural materials provide greater depth in comprehension, communication and cultural understanding.

This course sequence prepares students to meet the Minnesota Graduation Standard for World Languages: World Language. In addition, the course sequence provides a skill and information base for progress toward the Minnesota Graduation Standards for Social Studies, Diverse Perspectives, and Human Geography; and Inquiry and Research, History Through Culture, and World History and Cultures.
